A Degree Of Masters In Taxation Is Available To Students From Various Undergraduate Backgrounds

Studies in the Masters in Taxation degree focuses on tax laws that are applicable to business situations. This degree is also referred to as a Master of Science in Taxation. The degree is designed to prepare professionals whose goal is to become a specialist in the field.

The studies in this program can be handled successfully by students from many different undergraduate backgrounds. Training or previous experience in tax law is not required to enroll in a graduate program that focuses on these studies. This degree is open to almost any individual who has a strong interest in the applicable laws.

Most traditional state universities house the courses in this field in their accounting school. For this reason,  a series of undergraduate courses in accounting may be a prerequisite for acceptance in a Master in Taxation program at some of these schools. However, large city private colleges offering law and business courses consider their graduate tax programs as a separate discipline. The prerequisites at these schools for this advance degree are limited to only one or two basic accounting courses.

The composition of these programs vary at different  schools. Some schools will require a completion of 30 semester credit hours. Among these will be five to ten three semester hours of credit in tax classes. Others will accept business electives as a transfer in for the masters of taxation electives. Still other schools require a concentration of all ten classes in graduate courses in this subject specifically.

Some of the required courses may focus on research in this field. Other classes will focus on laws that effect individuals, corporations, or partnerships. Electives will focus on financial instruments, estates, gifts, trusts, real estate, IRS procedures, and many other business activities. It is wise to research different schools requirements prior to deciding which school’s program will meet the student’s needs prior to selecting an institution.
